I think cooks are the happiest artists. With every meal they prepare and serve, they cycle through a full range of artistic pleasures, from concept to composition to completely grateful and full bellies. As a writer, I envy the way a cook’s process reaps rewards, reflects the very picture of human satisfaction, and repeats. I have observed this up close because I am married to a cook.
I borrow from my wife Helen's model of artistic joy and satisfaction because so many writers come to me dissatisfied. I am interested in pleasure, and I think writers suffer when we deprive ourselves of the full spectrum of the pleasures of writing.
