Low and Slow: Interview with Raeme Miccio Gaviño

Low and Slow: Interview with Raeme Miccio Gaviño

Raeme Miccio Gaviño built Sexy Grammar’s first branded online presence, stepping in as a social media and marketing expert when she was just fifteen. It’s my pleasure to introduce her as a writer and professional running her own business almost a decade after her stint with me as the best intern ever.

Raeme studied History of Art and Visual Culture at UCSC and has self-published two books of poetry. She is a passionate curator, designer, and teacher that exclusively works with and employs women. She is the founder and teacher of Solstice Synergy Creative Circle, a mastermind inspiring working creatives.

What are you dreaming about?

I’ve been dreaming about fashion!! In a recent dream, I went to a rustic wedding with hot pink crocs on. In my daydreams I imagine having a gallery and hanging art on freshly painted walls ahead of an opening.

What are you reading?

Right now I’m reading There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job by Kikuko Tsumura. This is the August selection for Junior High LA’s book club. This novel was translated from Japanese to English — I particularly love reading translations because it feels like I’m reading two authors at once. I like the way English can come about as much more poetic when it lends itself to translation.

How do imagination and research show up in your work?

I record my imaginings in narrative storytelling — each morning my friend and I call each other up and have a ‘gospel’ session. Sometimes it turns into a gossip section; most times actually. We share dreams, spiritual guidance, secondhand stories about people we know or follow on the internet.

This type of community interchange of information about the whole self’s experience is part of my research practice as well. When I go deep with my direct community of women we are able to identify needs to aid in the development of our juiciest, most creative selves.

Sometimes, those stories inspire a blog post idea that gets recorded in my Notes app. Other times these revelations turn out as lessons for my creative cohort. I also make YouTube videos and Instagram posts where I’ll ponder openly about art and culture.

What are you editing?

Right now I’m working with a new copywriter. We’re refining their blog and newsletter writing skills so they can take over all of the written content produced by raememg creative services. It’s been very rewarding to watch my team grow. Collectively we are editing and engineering our process and workflows in order to create a seamless experience both within our team and with our clients and community.

How does feedback exchange work in  Solstice Synergy Creative Circle?

A few weeks ago we had our Concept Critiques. Each woman presented a theoretical project, including the resources needed and the marketing that could be involved in sharing this work. We made space for open discussion about creative value, logical next steps, and other ways to execute our creative concepts. This hive-mind approach allows for an incubation of creative ideas in a much more rapid way.

A big part of this container is trust. The transparency of trust is a two way street. Women who trust each other can hold that kind of space together. I’m very proud of the trusting community and our collective rhythm, and I’m very excited to reopen the community with our passive offering: The Equinox Pack.

What are your current projects? Are you submitting?

Right now, I’m committed to rest and honoring time — even if it’s moving slower or faster than I want it to. I have been giving myself more permission to rest and more permission to go slow. I’ve noticed that my engine runs better low and slow — and it’s still a quality ride.

I’ve also submitted myself to running a creative agency with my name on the front of it. After over a decade of freelancing, I decided to unify my services as raememg creative services. I’m proud to only work with women as my employees, my contractors, and my clients. Submitting to owning up to my talents and working as my own boss, submitting to the niche that I thrive and find joy in — all while going slow. That’s how I submit.
